Six-shooters, mud, blood, and demons. And most importantly, history. So, let’s talk about my book Where Shadows Are the Darkest. So, unlike most of the books in the genre of weird west, I decided to anchor my book in real history rather than a fantastical world. Think of it like a pot of chili, okay? We have the history, that’s the main ingredient. The demons and the supernatural are kind of like some other-worldly chilies thrown in. Super spicy, right? And then of course I have my fictional characters that are tied and and they’re all tied together, okay?
WEIRD WESTERN NOVEL: WHERE SHADOWS ARE THE DARKEST
They’re all woven together. Why I chose this period is cause cowboys are cool, number one. Number two, it’s a low-tech, low-science environment. And if you look at history in that time period especially, it’s already terrifying.
Weird Western Novel: Where Shadows are the Darkest
Novel by Clay Boone
A look into unsanitized history will show that human nature is the true horror. When I wrote WSAD, I wanted to give it a darker edge.
There are darker things waiting within our reality than could ever be made up. Take a look through human history to truly understand human nature. No one’s hands are clean come out clean. My book refines that grit with a wounded country that festers beneath the embers of civil war. The setting, backstories, and characters are loosely based on what’s already been written. I just put a darker edge on it.
