About Clay Boone

Clay Boone grew up in rural Missouri, where the past was never really past. Stories about the Civil War and Reconstruction weren’t just history to him—they were family. Passed down through generations by word of mouth, those firsthand accounts gave him a sense of that era as something lived, not studied .

When he set out to write a Western, he didn’t head for the usual gun-smoke-and-glory frontier. He went south. Specifically, he staked a claim in the Reconstruction-era South, a place most Western fiction skips entirely. His debut novel, Where Shadows Are the Darkest, is his answer to that gap .

Boone doesn’t write gunsmoke and glory. His work is grounded in the copper taste of blood, the smell of last night’s fire, and the burning in your lungs when you run . He draws inspiration from deep dives into Judeo-Christian demonology, period-specific occult practices, exorcism traditions, and the fractured religious landscape of the 1870s South .

He saw early inspiration in the video game Hunt: Showdown 1896, which drops players into a demon-haunted frontier. He loved the premise but wanted more weight, more cost, less fantasy. That tension between genre fun and genuine consequence runs through every page of his work .

In his telling, there are worse fates than death, and the real question is never who wins. It is what survives when everything settles . Book two is in the works, with a target around 2028
